School Bus CHP Practice Test 2026 – The All-in-One Guide to Excel in Your Exam!

A student is allowed to cross in front of a school bus when the driver signals that it is safe to do so. This safety protocol is crucial because the bus driver has a clear view of the surrounding area and is responsible for ensuring that it is safe for children to cross. The driver's signal indicates that there are no moving vehicles and the area is secure for the child to proceed. This procedure protects students from the dangers of traffic and enhances their safety as they navigate crossing in front of the bus, where visibility might be limited.

The other scenarios do not ensure safety. Allowing a student to cross whenever they choose could lead to potentially dangerous situations, especially if they misjudge oncoming traffic. Crossing only when there is no traffic does not account for the possibility of unseen vehicles that may appear suddenly. Relying solely on the bus driver’s discretion without a clear signal can lead to confusion and increases the risk of accidents. Therefore, the only reliable practice is to wait for a clear signal from the driver indicating that it is safe to cross.
